April is National Stress Awareness Month. I break out into laughter. As if most of us needed to become more “aware” of our stress!! I calm down, and then realize that April is also National Rosacea Awareness Month. Hmmm. Coincidence? Maybe. Accident? NO. On the list of triggers for Rosacea, stress is right up at the top. If you have rosacea, you understand. There’s nothing like looming deadlines at work, a hectic carpool schedule or an illness in the family to get rosacea flaring. You need tools to deal with all of this. Here are three very effective strategies that cost nothing, can be done almost anywhere and have proven physiologic effects for reducing stress:
- Breath Work: There are scores of breathing techniques that have been used for centuries. It’s free and it’s literally right under your nose. Here’s a video explanation of the Relaxing Breath that we did with the girls from Spa50 last year. Try it and see how you feel afterward!
- Fun Sweaty Activity: No, you don’t have to join a gym or enroll in the latest fitness craze. In fact, we’re not even going to use the “E” word… let’s call it “Fun, sweaty activity.” It really doesn’t matter what it is – brisk walking, ice skating, biking, kickboxing, rollerblading, shooting hoops with the kids or chasing the Frisbee around with your dog – just get out there and have fun!
- EFT: If you’re like me, much of the stress in your life comes from how you are thinking about what’s actually going on in your life! If so, this technique is for you. Call it “Emotional Acupressure” if you will, EFT is easy, free and can be done anywhere too. I’ve done it at stoplights in bathrooms, and even in elevators! Here’s some great info and a free get-started guide from Forrest Samnik, LCSW, EFT Cert.I, of LifeWorks Counseling & Coaching. EFT is amazing for extremely stressful situations too.
When combined with a customized skin care plan, these three techniques can be a very effective way to not only reduce stress, but the secondary symptoms of rosacea as well.
