I stood in the grocery store pondering the huge case of meats. I was standing in front of the section with the natural and organic products comparing cuts, price per pound and exactly what “natural” meant. Very engrossed, I didn’t even notice the gentleman who had sidled up next to me having the same dilemma. When I looked up and nodded, he asked if it was really worth it to buy organic, “do we really get more for this price?” I believe we do, but the real question is what don’t we get? Yes, we’re paying a premium price – for eating food free of pesticides, fillers, artificial colors and flavors, and in this particular case, “pink slime.” All things your body has no idea what to do with and has to work very hard to process, eliminate or worse yet, store (I get the image of radioactive waste being stored underground somewhere only to cause problems later). The premium price we pay for clean food then, is not just about getting more nutrients.
But what does this all have to do with skin health? Remember that your skin is an organ – the largest one you have and part of many other systems in your body like excretory. It’s even been dubbed “the third kidney”, so when you are taking in all kinds of toxins, your skin has to put many other important jobs on the back-burner to help remove what has been deemed not useful, not helpful or dangerous. By incorporating as much clean food into your eating as possible, we not only lighten the load of cleanup, we also give our bodies the building blocks for beautiful, healthy skin!
